Announcement: QA Dashboard is now Oobeya.
🎉 We’re excited to announce that we’ve officially changed our name to Oobeya.
In the beginning, we set out to build a brand-new product that offers a quality monitoring platform for enterprise-level software development organizations. Our product, which aims to collect all the quality-related metrics by connecting to SDLC/ALM tools, was named QA Dashboard.
QA Dashboard was a name that directly defines the product we designed and does not surprise the target audience. However, as the product strategy evolved, a confusing situation emerged that exceeded the QA Dashboard’s name. “QA Dashboard” has become a name that misleads the target audience and narrows the audience the product might reach. After realizing this, we did some research and brainstorm for a while to change the product name. At this point, we decided not to make a forced-choice and did not rush. Finally, as the product updated and evolved with its strategy, a new brand name has appeared: Oobeya.
What is the term “Oobeya”?
Oobeya is a Japanese word that means large room. Furthermore, the term oobeya is a part of the Toyota Product Management System and the Lean Product Development strategy. The concept of oobeya developed in the 1990s. The managers of the Toyota Prius project met in a large room to increase collaboration and solve difficult problems together. With the oobeya practice at Toyota, communication and decision-making processes have accelerated, transparency and collaboration within the organization have increased. Stakeholders could find and execute solutions for the issues immediately and efficiently in the oobeya room.
In the practice of oobeya, the walls of the large room are covered with several metrics, graphs, objectives, plans, analyzes, issues, and actions. The materials which cover the walls visualize all steps of the production process and also the metrics measured.
Oobeya’s core practices can be described as follows:
- All the significant metrics (quality, performance, user satisfaction, the efficiency of the production process, etc.) are monitored inside the room.
- The problematic units and bottlenecks in the production process and also in the product itself are made visible and identified on the walls of this room.
- By taking action together and fast, improvements are provided in the production process and the product itself.
- The results of all improvements are also tracked in this room.
